In 2012, Jeff Bezos sat on stage at a fireside chat in front of hundreds of tech executives. He was asked a question about how he built Amazon.

He explained:

“I very frequently get asked the question, ‘What is going to change in the next 10 years?’ I almost never get the question: ‘What's not going to change in the next 10 years?’”

He looked at the audience and continued. "I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two—because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time."

Storytelling is one of these timeless strategies.

As AI enters the world, it is hard to decide what is worth learning. But storytelling is what Nicholas Taleb refers to as Anti-Fragile: it thrives in uncertainty.

Through every change in technology, every cultural movement, every political shift, storytelling has been the driving force. The world might be becoming more artificial, but we are still human. We are evolutionarily hard-wired to pay attention to stories (the cavemen who ignored stories of danger behind bushes quickly became a lion’s dinner).

When I started writing online, I wrote for thirteen months. Few people read except my mum. Gratefully, my first viral post was a personal story. It made me realise how powerful it was for attracting a quality audience, and led to a long obsession with becoming a better storyteller. I have told stories almost every day for 6 years now: in my emails, my coaching, and in general conversation.
